Paul R. Laska earned a B.S. in criminology from the Florida State University in 1973.
 
He began his law enforcement career with the Belle Glade Police Department, in Florida, in 1974, serving there as an Identification Officer for three and a half years.
 
He then joined the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida as a Crime Scene Investigator. In 1979 he was assigned to reorganize the agency’s filing system, basing it upon fingerprints. In 1979 he also attended the Hazardous Devices School at Redstone Arsenal, then establishing the bomb disposal function for the Sheriff’s Office.
 
In 1981 he left the Sheriff’s Office for 4 months, joining the Florida State Fire Marshall’s Office as an investigator. He then returned to the Sheriff’s Office.

In 1986 he was assigned as the Identification Officer for the Sheriff’s Office, responsible for maintenance of all fingerprint files, latent fingerprint identification, and being an assistant to the Crime Scene Supervisor. In 1988 he was assigned as the supervisor of the Forensic Science Unit, encompassing crime scene investigation, fingerprint identification, and bomb disposal. During this time period he was also personally assigned responsibility for oversight of lock security and the key issue system for the Sheriff’s Office. The following year the Central Records Section was also placed under the Forensic Science Unit. During this time responsibility for the newly passed Florida criminal environmental laws was placed under him for the county.

In 1993, during the reorganization of the agency, records and environmental investigations were assigned to other commands. In 1995 he left Forensic Science and became the Environmental Investigator and Bomb Disposal Supervisor for the Sheriff’s Office, a position he held until his retirement in 2002.

Paul has been an instructor since 1979. In that year he joined the adjunct staff at Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, FL. He also has been an adjunct instructor with the Florida Institute of Technology’s Jensen Beach campus. He has also provided training for a variety of public safety agencies medical professionals, and private enterprise on Florida’s Treasure Coast and the Palm Beaches.

Since his retirement, Paul has continued to serve as an instructor with the U.S. Department of State’s Anti Terrorism Assistance Program, the University of South Florida Center for Biological Defense, Indian River Community College, New Mexico Tech, Safety Training and Consultations, International, and other programs.

Paul has also written extensively, his work appearing in Law Enforcement Technology, Law Officer, JEMS, The Detonator, and the Journal of Forensic Identification.
 
Paul has been certified as an expert in various aeas, including fingerprint identification in Palm Beach and Martin Counties of Florida and the Southern, Middle, and Nothern Federal Districts of Florida and the Northern Federal District of Indiana, firearms function, photography, and bomb/explosives technology in Martin County, Fl., and bomb/explosives technology in the Southern Federal District of Florida.
